“Poem of the Tangled Feet (965)”

Photo inspiring "Poem of the Tangled Feet (965) shows a dad laying on a queen-sized bed with two boys with their backs facing up, bare feet and legs tangled up in each other after rough-housing.

“Poem of the Tangled Feet (965)” by Kelly Hudgins

It’s just the way the sun & shadows lay gently on skin…
Sometimes soft, sometimes harsh,
But heartwarming, and real
The gift of presence – to see and to be seen
To reveal and to remind
We’re right here
Together
At last
Not forever,
But right now
Here
Together

In-home newborn photos inspiring a poem –
Raleigh Newborn & Family Photography

When I first shared this poem on social media, I had a number of caption ideas that didn’t make the cut… some born out of the question, “am I really a poet though?” Even now months later, I said, “nope” to myself when I typed that question out.

So I’ll share my alternate captions below, and maybe they’ll serve as a bit of inspiration for your own journey, whatever it may be.

Alternate caption 1:

I’m no poet, but I did write a poem the moment I came upon this photo. And if anyone else said those words to me, I would respond – “If you write a poem of any kind, of any length, I think that makes you a poet.”

Alternate caption 2:

As I’m going through photos after a session, I often make notes of ideas for sharing on social media – most of which never actually make it to social media as I move from project to project for my clients. This poem really wrote itself though & is begging to be shared, so here you go –

Alternate caption 3:

I’ve been reading a lot of Josie Balka’s poetry book recently.

Alternate caption 4:

I have that warm feeling in my chest right now, that feeling of “rightness.” Creating images that are heartfelt and meaningful. Letting a poem pour out of me without real thought or effort, reflecting the beautiful and true moments in the photograph. Taking steps to actually share that with people. This might be the only poem I ever write from a photograph, and maybe later it’ll feel excessive that I typed it out into a little Canva design… but does that even matter? It feels right right now. I think that’s enough.

This photo may seem like a weird one to inspire a poem, but we don’t always make the rules, ya know? // This photo may seem like a weird one to inspire a poem, but we’re not always in control, ya know?
