Hi everyone!
The thing I love about documentary family photo sessions is that capturing the boring stuff is the whole point. Or the chaotic stuff, or everyday routines.
Whatever parts of your day just feel like your day-to-day rhythms… Those are some of the best parts of life to capture. Why? Because that’s what your family’s life is really about!
I love helping you see all the little bits of magic happening when there’s not much going on. And when it feels like there’s too much going on, I love helping you see all the funny or sweet little things happening that are easily overlooked.
Today I’d love to share photos from a summer evening at home with Janel’s family.
At booking, they were “looking forward to it!”
Before the session, they were “excited and nervous!!”
After seeing the photos, Janel went to text me SO FAST because responding in an email just wouldn’t cut it.
“KELLY OH MY GOD. I am so excited about these pictures. I’m probably going to cry a little bit. Maybe a medium amount.”

With these unposed photo sessions, there’s no expectation to do anything out of the norm or be anyone other than yourself. Toddler Sam got to be curious, wander around his house for an hour, and laugh with his parents just like he does every day. Janel and Richard BOTH got to be in photos from their everyday life, rather than one of them being stuck behind the camera. And now they’ll be able to look back on a typical summer evening when Sam was 2 years old – forever.
A Summer Evening at Home – Documentary Family Photos in Holly Springs
We first followed Sam to their family pickup truck so he could eat a popsicle there (as one does).

Say hello to their sweet dog, Loa!

I was amazed at all these beautiful zinnias! Janel took the seeds from last year’s zinnias and scattered them all around the garden for this year. I’ve gotta say – it worked beautifully!

When Mom becomes the wipe for a sticky popsicle chin (and then his shirt finishes the job)

A toddler being a toddler with a long rod of some kind, and a mom being a mom with a natural level of worry.

I love how every kid has their own weird little thing that they enjoy. This one likes to play on the changing table for about 10 seconds before asking to get back down (and will do it again 5 minutes later). I see something different like this in every family’s house I visit!

Thank you for trusting me with yourself, your family, and these beautiful everyday moments, Janel 💜
